Ruth, We have allowed drivers under 10 to compete at East Anglian outdoor events and they are allowed at IHDT UK indoor events, subject to safeguards and the organiser's agreement. Yes, with their own liability insurance. We adopted a set of rules/guidelines which Amanda Savile kindly sent me - here Young drivers rules, from her experience with Young Chariots &c. We're actually less sure about younger grooms; young drivers generally have small possibly sensible ponies and must have an adult groom; a young groom on an adult turnout could be at more risk? We've had a few adult grooms fly off at events this season ... We haven't been able to get much guidance from the BHDTA on this, so they may not be official rules. The answer I had from the BHDTA office in May was: "I was unaware that the BHDTA had any rules for Young Drivers. As far as I knew our Young Drivers all had to be at least 14 to join and, once a BHDTA member, were bound by the same rules that apply to all BHDTA members as per our Rule Book. I'll raise this matter for discussion at our next Council meeting on 10th June." I ask periodically ... If anyone can clarify, that would be good. |

Hi, please can people let me know what happens in thier clubs regarding young drivers / grooms. Apparently the BHDTA insurance for clubs puts a lower age of 10yrs for drivers. Do any clubs allow younger drivers to compete at outdoor events? Do any clubs allow younger people to groom in the dressage / cones phase under supervision of adult? Do clubs ask for evidence of 'additional' personal / public libility insurance for young drivers / grooms? Our 8 yrd old would like to groom for me in cones / dressage but curenlty it appears she can not at our local club, eventhough she has BHS gold insurance of her own and drives / grooms for us at home. |
