Quote Barry Hilditch:
"The entry level is disappointing & is being monitored closely before next seasons qualifiers are arranged."

I'm not sure about the other qualifiers (maybe a representative from the organising teams for each would be prepared to comment), but for Downlands a lot of the regular Novice Qualifier competitors of old have now been moved up to Imtermediate and so were competing in our Open class. Being early in the season, the pool of potential NQs was very low. What we did have was a fair number of competency cards being signed off so, hopefully, the pool of potential competitors at the lower end of the scale is starting to build again.

Before trying to re-engineer (again!) the class structures, I would suggest having a respite for a season and let the new structure bed in.

Regards,

Chris Laing

Dave, I think the various numbers and qualification scheme is pretty clear to me from what Barry says and the web site - if there's anything particular which is unclear please let me know what it is, or what area, and maybe I can explain it another way, or find out - I'll try.

I'd like to thank Barry for taking part in this forum and providing this information, as well as all the work keeping the points leagues and qualifications up to date - it's no small task.

I now understand why the BHDTA is in such a mess ........can anyone understand what Mr Hilditch is trying to say? He sounds totally confused.

National Championships.
At the moment only 1 national has been lost & 100 people have qualified for the Chapionships.
At yesterday's Council meeting the Competitions Committee presented a detailed analysis of class entries for all the Nationals, comparative figures for 2006 & the current position for qualification. The monitoring is updated after every event by Competitions Committee on behalf of Council.

Novice Qualifiers Entry Summary.
Thoresby Pony 5, Horse 2, Downlands P-1, H-2, Dalmeny P-0, H-2, Windsor P-2, H-5, Newnham no entrants, Escrick P-2, H-3, Erdigg P-2, H-2, St. Fort P-1, H-1. Forest of Dean & East Anglian decided not to run classes due to low entry.

So far 7 individuals have entered a Pony Novice Qualifier & 6 of them have qualified, 10 have entered the Horse Qualifiers & 6 have qualified.

The entry level is disappointing & is being monitored closely before next seasons qualifiers are arranged.

If there are a lot of peolpe out there who were hoping to qualify I would ask them to let me know & I can pass the information on to Ian Gilbert, Chairman of Competitions Committee.

Brighton was the first event but Champions of 2006 automatically qualify & some single horse competitors qualified in 2006 at events after Lowther, which was the Single Horse Championship. With the new classes Competitions Committee allocated these people to the appropriate class.
If you have any specific queries please contact me, contact given on the web list of qualifiers.

Thanks Mike for the list of people who have alread qualified, but can I ask one question? How come people have qualified when they have finished 3 or 4 at at event? I know that it is the 1st place winner that qualifies and then it is passed down the line if say the winner has already qualified, but like at Brighton which was the 1st event should mean that only the 1st places qualify, but it seems that people have also qualified coming 2nd and 3rd, is this a mistake or have the rules changed?

I know at David Broom's there was 2 Novice Pony's and 1 Novice horse in the NQ, so that was why that event was cancelled, so I agree that maybe the points league needs to be looked at so it is far, perhaps they have to do the best 2 or 3 scores count for each person!

Mike, Michael Wall told me that there were three entries for the Crick NQ, two ponies and one horse. It was a shame because Crick is an excellent venue.

Thanks - I see the novice points especially could be affected by these cancellations.

Despite a large entry overall, Ashfields had only one entry for NQ horse and one for NQ pony - don't know about David Broome Centre event?

Maybe people should get their points and or qualify anyway if they enter and then their class or event is cancelled? Or would that be too confusing/less fair?

(I know cancellations are disappointing - we were entered and looking forward to Henbury)

I think perhaps the point may of been missed, I think they may of been referring to the fact that the Novice events have been cancelled due to lack of entries, so if someone had planned to do places like David Brooms and Ashfields (this weekend), both have cancelled the NQ which doesn't give them time to enter other events if they would like to try and do well in the points league. Also people have to plan time off work so probably can't alter that time to travel elsewhere so they obviously can't try for the points league, or maybe I have mis understood what is being said here!

It's disappointing if events are rained off, but it looks to me as if about 100 people are already qualified, so it shouldn't be bad....depending what the rest of the summer (?) does.

There's a list of people already qualified at http://www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk/tables/2007/National%20Qualifiers%202007.pdf

Similarly the points leagues are looking quite healthy to me - or am I missing something?

I feel that the lack of national events is going to make a mockery of the qualifying system for the national championships. There are going to be precious few competitors. Perhaps the BHDTA should consider opening up the placings at events to enable people lower down the placings to qualify. If not it is going to be a very sparce championships. I was wondering what will happen about the points league this year, for the novice class who have had a lot of events cancelled due to lack of entries, (which isn't their fault), this means that some people who would of done a few events actually have only managed 1 or 2 which isn't down to the want of trying to compete. I know from experience that people competing also try and do well in the points league as part of their season but with so many events cancelled they just don't have a fair crack at the whip!
