Geoff, many thanks for the fly spray formula. We made it up on Tuesday morning and applied it straight away. Since then it's been keeping the flies and midges at bay down here in sunny Gloucestershire. The best thing was that we had all the ingredients around the house and garden. Best wishes Alan |

We use "Switch" on one horse, that has worked to great effect. The other product we use with excellent results is Coopers repel plus, we use it in a small spray daily before going out. David Hewat |

We use 1/3 dettol, 1/3 vinegar, 1/3 water. Smells really fresh (!) and it does work - even on Scottish midges! (Works as a disinfectant for Thrush too!) |

I use Avon Skin So Soft Soft & Fresh Bath Oil mixed 50:50 with water and sprayed on liberally whenever needed. It's the best thing I have ever used on my sweet itchy pony (his skin can't take citronella), it doesn't smell too bad and, best of all, it's cheap and can be bought online. It also makes his coat soft and silky. Dust sometimes sticks to his white bits but it brushes off easily. Just remember that it's not tested for use on horses so test on a small area before spraying it on all over. |

Hi, I have used the following home made fly spray for at least 25 years on heavy (sweaty) horses and driving horses, and more recently on a sensitive skinned palomino all with excellent results. I sometimes wonder if commercially available fly sprays work in some parts of the country and not in others, has anyone any evidence to support this? 50 mls citronella oil 100 mls meths 100mls vinegar 4/5 tea bags squirt of fairy liquid water 2 litre bottle 1. Make strong tea with herbs added if you like (mint, thyme, lemon balm) 2. Leave to go cold 3. Put the rest of the ingredients in the bottle, add cold strained tea and herbs mixture. 4. Top up with water and add a squirt of fairy. 5. Put in spray bottle and use liberally Geoff |

I can’t suggest any particular spray that I’ve found stands out from the rest. I tend to make my own. But I can’t say that it works better than any other. But what I can suggest is to treat all his bites with Arnica Gel. Its really good with the swelling and very soothing. (I use it myself with bruises that I have). It’s not really an answer to your question, but I find my horse really settles when I actually start to do something about his bites. Good Luck. : ) |

Hi I drive a Gelderlander who is very sensitive to flies. Can anyone recommend any fly spray that actually works? - As he can become a pain during dressage. |
