Faye- Bless you for the offer, I am very grateful. We have longreined and lunged Merlin with my dog in the school, and no incidents. I let him follow the dog(as it walked with my husband) as a dog moving away is less threatening than one sitting still or coming towards you. He got very close on his own, as I let him set his pace on the longrein. We don't get much chance to do this work, but when we have it has been ok. I also walked Merlin towards my sitting dog, when he got close I asked him to stand for a minute then my hubby walked the dog away, and we rewarded Merlin. I'm hopeful that more of this should help. If I get into trouble with anything rleated to the dogs or putting to,(as we still have no carriage) I will contact you if you dont mind-i may need your friends help! Thank you again, Zarla |

I'm near Leamington Spa, my dogs are used to carriages/ponies i could bring them over and do a bit of heel work keeping them close to me while you worked your pony in long reins or on the lunge. how far into leicestershire are you? i have a friend who is very good with tricky ponies i can put you in touch with him too. |

my pony had a frightening experience during breaking, he got loose while pulling tyres and got caught up very badly, he was already a nervous pony but is now progressing into a confident happy driving pony i have had him a year and its taken alot of time and paitence to get him to this stage so please dont loose faith in your pony, is he happy to drive when there are no dogs about? find someone with a dog that is safe around horses to help build his confidence back up, just take things slow and dont go pushing yourself to hard or expecting to much, you yourself will be nervous of what may happen with a dog about so just work at having a dog around while your grooming eventually progressing to having the dog running in the field while you work your pony, if i was closer i would of been more than happy to help but im afraid im near york |

Thank you Edwina, we are in leicestershire. I don't want this to ruin this fantastic pony. We have been through so much already, this dogowner has no idea what he's done- though he has horses himself! I am so afraid of not getting it right, and possibly making the situation worse. But, I need to feel that Merlin's better able to cope or we will be running away from dogs that we pass while we drive again. I want him for pleasure driving. thank you again. Zarla |

do you have any dogs of your own? it might be useful to have a well trained dog handled by someone else while you are handling your pony to get him comfortable around dogs again, im sure it will take time but by having a dog around the yard while you are handling your pony and by leading them near to each other will help settle him down to become comfortable around dogs agian, take it slowly and start on a headcollar or in an open bridle so he can see where the dog is, of course his attacks will be purely fear related just take things slowly and im sure he will come right, where abouts are you situated? edwina |

My driving pony was out on a beautiful quiet public road 2weeks ago and was attacked by a large deerhound. My pony has previously been part of a carriage dog display so he is well used to driving and dogs. The deerhound ran at his head, then after my son and i were thrown from the carriage, the dog chased him round the field and ultimately into a ditch. Since this traumatic incident my pony has begun to rush at dogs and bite them. I need to try to rehabilitate him, or his useful life as a pleasure drive is over. We have only had him 5 months, he is a star and we love him, we cannot afford to change him just like that either. what can anyone suggest to help us sort him out please??? |
