I spoke to my farier and vet about this and they both recommended using two studs in each shoe all round.

I use small road studs and change them to slightly bigger ones at the 10min halt.

Hi Wendy, I only use road studs for my pony team (one on the outside of each hoof) and this works very well for competition or home. I personaly am not keen on screw in studs as the going varies so much on marathons that its very hard to get the right ones, also if I had to use them I would always put in 2 as when you hit tarmack you can do more harm than good as the foot would be very unlevel with only 1 stud in. Thebast thing to do is have a chat with your farrier.
As far as Sandringham goes I haven't got a clue sorry.

If it's of any help to you, I drive a 14hh Irish cob and find a single road stud in the outside of each hind shoe has been fine. I worry about using larger studs when there is an appreciable amount of road work on the marathon - my farrier spends time ensuring the pony's feet are level and I hesitate to make them uneven. I do put the studs in for dressage and cones as well as the marathon as I feel it gives the pony confidence in his footing.

My farrier says that two studs in a shoe can stop the foot pivoting when the pony is turning and the fetlock joint would be put under increased pressure. This is, however, just his opinion and I am sure other people will have equally valid arguments for using two studs.

This is what I have found works for me and my pony.
