I see there is now a definition/answer to the question. The web site now says:

"Number of competitors in a class will be taken as the number who started the competition, as shown in the results sheet. They must be shown as having a dressage score or, in the case of a Novice Qualifier, as having a presentation score."

I'm not sure when this appeared on the site, but it's on the web page listing qualifiers. This makes it reasonably clearcut. (It's tempting to ask whether the score sheet will show a dressage score for someone who started but was eliminated in dressage, is E a score? is W a score? but perhaps that's an academic point).

Thank you very much Mike, this is obviously the place to get things sorted!

Personally I would have thought that the number should be the number immediately after the withdrawal time. I would imagine that some competitors went to the event, knowing there were 6 in the class, and that they had to get in the first two to qualify. Only to find out just before the event started that there were only 5 entries and they had to win to gain an entry to Windsor. That must have been a bit of a disappointment.

Thanks

Barry Hilditch kindly called me up to comment on this; the competitions committee works out who has qualified, based on the published scheme, and he actually does this.

Barry's inclination is that the number is the actual number of competitors who started, but he can see it could alternatively be the number of entries present just after the withdrawal date. He's promised to confer with the competitions people and get a definitive answer, perhaps at their next meeting in June, and will update this.

..and it all sounded so simple.

Pete, I'm double checking and will ensure we get an answer.

I have just been looking through the results of various events listed on this website. The result of the Novice Qualifier at Thoresby this year makes me wonder if the second place person qualifies for Windsor or not.

There were 6 entries which, according to the rules, lets the first two in the results through to Windsor. However, apparently just before the dressage, one competitor decided not to do his test but later did the marathon and cones as HC.
Does the person who came second qualify for Windsor or not?
It would seem to be "outside the spirit of the sport" to rule out the second place person but "within the spirit of the sport" to let them through to Windsor afterall there were 6 entries.

Mike or Ian can you clear this up please.

By the way I am not connected with any of the competitors
