We were told, if there is any commercial interest at all eg sponsorship, then the WATO cert is required. |

Thanks for info - I spent a fun Sunday and have managed to remove the logo's and advertising so I am now clean! But I still intend getting to the bottom of this as knowledge is power. |

I spoke to the trading standards people re. the logos/advertising on a horsebox or trailer. I understood that they are the people who are interested in this aspect. Try phoning your local TS office? |

The logos have got nothing to do with Defra as he pointed out in his letter. You need to get in touch with the Ministry of transport. They will be able to help you in your search for answers. Best of luck Danielle Twitchen Principle Horseboxes |

Thanks all for your responses. I also contacted DEFRA and asked them the same question, here is their reply (I agree with David's comment that the logos may make me an easy target! So you know what I'll be doing this weekend.) Dear Caroline Thank you for your enquiry. From an animal welfare perspective there are no infringements from having logos on a vehicle. Council Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations, as implemented by the Welfare of Animals (Transport (England) Order 2006 (and parallel legislation in Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales) came into force to protect the welfare of animals during transport when they are being transported in connection with an economic activity, that is as part of a business or trade. The legislation does not detail any requirements concerning advertising. Therefore you will not need to hold a competence certificate or a transporter authorisation because you are not transporting animals in connection with an economic activity. Not about advertising but about lorries - check that your 3.5 to 7.5 tonne lorry has the correct side mirrors, see www.ohto.co.uk and www.checkyourmirror.co.uk for advice (how did they think of that site name?). Only newer lorries - reg after 1 Jan 2000 - are affected but the regulations are from 31 March. |

If you receive ANY financial gain however small then you do need a WATO. If the advert is old not applying to you then a prosecution is unlikely but you may be targeted by Trading Standards and VOSA officers for roadside checks - which are a pain and take ages and may lead to other technical infringements - no tail bandages, water, nylon not leather headcollars etc Quite apart from the lorry itself! If it's the company that built the horsebox, that is fine to have thier logo. However if it is another company advertising on your horsebox, you need an operators license. This is what I've been told Danielle Twitchen Principle Horseboxes |

Does anyone know if it's ok to have advertising or logos on the side of your horse lorry? I am a private individual with one horse to transport and do not intend having a WATO certificate of competence. However someone suggested to me that if my lorry has any advertising or logos on the side I may need a certificate. The logos were on the lorry when I bought it. Should I remove them if I can? Any help or advice much appreciated. If they are not allowed can someone please point me to the relevant legislation? |
