Women can train to get their HGV/LGV licence for only £250 thanks to a government scheme designed to get more women into the transport industry. In East Anglia, get in touch with Chris Ness or Julia Silverman at RTT, 01473 602424, for more information. (I believe this is a national scheme for this year, so contact your local HGV training provider if you don't live in EA.) You have to get your provisional HGV licence entitlement and pass the theory test (£32) before six days of training. You have to take a NVQ assessment in order to get this reduced rate - it normally costs around £1000, I believe. You can do the test using a horsebox and you can be assessed on loading/unloading a horse. You need a HGV lorry to do the test in and must be employed, at least 16 hours/week. Worth a go? (Would you let me know if you follow this up as I'd like to write about it! Thanks, Fiona - 01473 735732) |
