The two drivers and horses were not qualified to compete in the Advanced class as the combination of horse/driver have to qualify with the horse from the open class to progress into the advanced class. With the exception of those seeking selection who can ask Council for dispensation to move up to enable them to be concidered for selection. It appears to me this was an oppertunity to facilitate FEI qualification for the horses. |

Surely what you describe is the advanced horse class? I'm sure the organisers had a very good reason for laying on this unusual, unadvertised, and presumably last minute class, but it does look unnecessary... |

These are competitors who are trying to qualify either themselves or their horses for international competition. Hopetoun is one of the FEI approved qualifying events. The dressage must include foreign international judges. At Hopetoun they were: Ge Konig (NED) and Sarah Mullins (IRE). From the FEI rules: "Drivers and all Horses must successfully complete all three Competitions (without Elimination, Retirement or Disqualification) at any combined FEI approved National or FEI International Driving event in their own class. Drivers and all Horses must also achieve a result of 65 points or less in a Dressage competition, at an approved event, in Dressage test 9, as outlined in Art 905.3 of the FEI Rules for Driving. I agree Patti - it is our local event and the only one where we're not driving for hours to get there but there is something very special about Hopetoun. We had the most amazing fun and lovely to see so many people enjoying the huge marquee they set up - it becomes like a proper club house. The catering is first class and I vaguely remember the bar being a big hit both nights too. Hopetoun has something for everyone and deserves more support. Please try and come next year - you really are missing a fabulous event if you don't. |

Just got home from this fantastic event. Hopetoun is the most wonderful venue with excellent dressage arenas, fabulous marathon route and great catering and entertainment. You missed a treat! |
