Sorry, I missed the tandems so I assumed they were in arena 1. I entirely agree about comparing different courses but that seems to be what is happening because they are all part of the same results.

I think the competitors in arena 2 would have preferred the same test. It helps if you can measure your progress against the experienced competitors. I’m not sure who benefits from having a separate test.

There were horse and pony tandems in arena 2 and it was a different course. I don't think that the two arenas can be compared.

Or maybe not! There were 7 singles in arena 1 (advanced pony). All the rest were multiples. All 7 of these singles got round within the allowed time and none of them had more than one ball down so it was really just a matter of (bad) luck that there were not several more double clears in this class. The only double clear was actually one of the slowest times in the class (although at advanced level so not exactly slow!).

There were no multiples in arena 2, all singles. The fastest time was at a speed of 258 metres per minute. Also advanced speed ... so much for a level playing field. All of the double clears were in single pony. So, perhaps the course design was not quite so well suited to multiples and larger horses. However, designing a course for both horse teams and single ponies to get a 10% double clear ratio must be quite tricky!

n.b. They also simplified the arena 1 course after the first class – open horse pairs – and perhaps this last minute change to route also affected the number of clear rounds.
