Tandem Classes – Note for Drivers and Event Organisers
1. Article 901 of the BC rules provides that classes may be amalgamated if required. If it is necessary to amalgamate the pony and horse tandems the following provisions will apply to the amalgamated classes:-
a. It is for individual Event Organisers to decide whether to amalgamate classes at their event;
b. there will still be separate classes at the National Championships;
c. Marathon speeds are to be the same as they would be for separate classes – horse speeds for horses and pony speeds for ponies;
d. Cones speeds are to be the same as they would be for separate classes – horse speed for horses and pony speed for ponies;
e. Cones width will be the same for horses and ponies at 165 cm.
f. The highest placed pony tandem and the highest placed horse tandem will qualify for the national championships, disregarding those already qualified irrespective of the number of turnouts in the amalgamated class.
2. Article 912 of the BC rules sets out age limits and there is an inconsistency between the first line of the table (which applies to all Tandems) and the third line (which applies to all Pony Classes). This table should be read as if the word “all” in the first line was replaced with the word “Horse”. Thus a driver between 14 and 17 may drive a pony tandem provided their groom is 18 years or over and provided they meet the eligibility criteria set out in Annex 16.
