The test - FEI(I) - at the Junior Nationals called for four medium trots. Jay got four 8’s from one judge and four 6’s from the other judge for the same movements. That’s pretty consistently inconsistent! |

Inconsistent judging is part of the sport ! At the European dressage champs this year the Swedish Judge cost us the gold medal 6 judges had Emile Faurie 10/11 Swedish judge had Emile 44th with 10% difference !! |

I do agree with you Douglas to a point. There did seem to be some strange scoring. However with so many competitors it was very easy to be low down in the placings but only a penalty or two away from the top scorers. ie David had a score of 52 and Libby had a score of 60 but there were 20 places between them. There was also less than a penalty between 10th and 12th in the team competition after dressage and half a penalty between 9th and 10th. At that level it is that close. When comparing competitors it may be better to look at scores rather than placings. With regard to the influence of dressage, if my rather jaded memory serves me correctly, the winner of the dressage did not figure in the overall placings. The marathon demons moved up through the ranks. Perhaps the marathon has too much influence on the final results? (Although in the case of the world pairs I do think it was the cones!) |

Yet again, the Dressage Judges at the recent World Pairs Championship, have had wildly different placings which range from 7 –37, 10 – 44, 16 – 48, 9 –44, and worst of all 9 – 55 !!!! At Lezirias last year, the World Single Championship judges’ placings included ranges,15 – 54, 7 –47, 7 – 49, 9 – 54, 10 - 59, and 6 - 65 !!!! These are meant to be the crème de la crème judges with all the associated paper-work to prove their competence. I accept that their positions around the arena give them different perspectives but to this simple soul their markings do not appear consistent . At present great emphasis is placed on dressage. However, because of the above anomalies at the very top of the tree, perhaps, now is the time to re-assess the influence of dressage. |
