Practice!!! It does get easier to learn the more obstacles you do. When you go back to events you have done the previous year the obstacles will be familiar and stick in the mind better.
Also as a backstepper (note for your husband) I find it better to concentrate on where the gates are more than the route, so if the driver goes wrong, and even the best do, you can help them get back on route without making an error of course.

Remember it as a series of shapes eg. left circle, miss a gap, right serpentine, figure of eight, etc. Make sure you walk the lines you want to drive. Look at which side of a gap/channel you want to be on for the next turn. Try running it (those who know me will laugh at that! that's what grooms are for!!)- everything comes up faster and you get a better idea of 'awkward' corners.

And it gets easier with practice. Honest!

Different people 'learn' things different ways however one very useful tip is to LOOK UP! while walking your obs. So many people wander round looking at the ground - when you come to actually driving them they look totally different from a carriage.
Also spend a minute before leaving the obstacle to view it from the start gate and imagine yourself driving round your route - as you drive towards it on the marathon try to recall this image, that should help you a bit.

On remembering the course when you are doing the obstacles on the marathon? Last week I walked the obstacles 4 times as a whole, but each obstacle on all 4 times probably 4-5 times round, thought I had remembered it, but as soon as I got to the obstacles, I got lost. Couldnt remember the slightest thing, thank God for my husband who is my backstepper!
Does anyone have ny tips on how to remember it?
