I have downloaded smart runner and used that over last week and surprised how far I exercise and must admit I don't think people realize how little time you are actually out. I have also had the horse riding setting on it, when I rode out and it shows you how many calories you have used, that part I don't like, as it don't equal out to the chocolate I allow myself for this exercising. I will get garmin though as I will like it showing on my carriage when exercising as I have not got hands free on my hartland!

As far as I know, distance measuring devices, whether mechanical or electronic, didn't use to be allowed on the marathon. Maybe the rules have changed now. Mobile phones are now allowed, but only for emergency use (i.e. to summon help) and not for outside assistance (if you get lost). Maybe someone from the rules committee can udate us on the current situation.

I know there are many speed and distance logging apps around for smartphones, but in a way I do like something separate and dedicated for the purpose. There's something really useful about having a display on the carriage that you can glance at now and then to see your current speed or distance, just to see how you're doing. A bit like like a speedo on a car. But only during exercise or training, not in competition, of course !

Also Apps like Smart Runner - free and do similar elevation average speed distance etc. You can also easily draw out routes on Google map with free tool on the satellite view around field edges etc to pre-plan distances and save as routes letting you plan exercise timings etc Again usually works with phone in a pocket.

We downloaded a free app - Endomondo - onto my husband's blackberry. Downloads information automatically for you to look at when you get home and can be shared via facebook etc. Shows time (overall, fastest, average etc) distance, elevation, all to view via map or satellite. Very interesting.

We have a Garmin Edge 500. It's designed for cyclists. You can attach it anywhere on a carriage, so that driver or backstepper can see it. Or you can get a wrist-strap for it. It's roughly the same size as a sports stop watch.

Works anywhere using GPS satellite signal. No need to attach magnet or whatever to carriage. The good thing is that the main screen can be programmed to show various readings, like speed, distance, time, average speed. You decide what you want to see.

It will also work quite happily in your pocket - you don't actually have to be able to see it, because everything you do is stored in the device and can be uploaded to the Garmin site when you get home and you'll then get your day's activity plotted on a map, together with graphs of speed, distance, altitude etc.

Quite impressive and not too expensive. Look at the Garmin website to get pictures and the full spec.

Garmin GPS
Looking at getting one so I can look at how much time, distance and speed I have done in training, also hope to use it on walking holiday? Anyone got advise on which one I should get, don't want one which don't actually work in the middle of nowhere. So if you have one let me know. Or any views on having one of these for training?
