Can I add a note of caution with regard to putting side stabling on a horsebox.a lot of lorries are built to or very close to the max legal width of 8'2" and if you add stabling you cannot exceed that width inc the stabling. This is something VOSA have spotted and technically could impound a lorry as being illegal!

Here is a photo of alpaca hurdles. They only weigh about 3 to 5 kg each, but are very strong. A 16hh warmblood has not tipped them over despite her frequently leaning on them to reach grass. We use a couple of road stakes for added security and - in accordance with BHDTA rules - strap it onto the vehicle too.

Also, I should add that electric fencing won't work if you put rubber matting down (the horse spotted that one straight away!)

A number of people use sheep hurdles - often with extensions welded on for horses. These are fairly simple and very flexible (in terms of use).

Last season we got some aluminium alpaca hurdles. They were lighter than the steel sheep hurdles and just the right height for a horse (proper fence height).

Plastic cable ties provided a simple but very effective way of stopping them from rattling around or being accidentally being lifted out of place - both in transit and in use.

We don't have a roof/shelter at the moment.

Some folk use roll out awnings - often used by caravanners and those in motor sports.

We have side stabling fitted into the side of are box, rather than it being inbuilt to it. Most stabling is made to individual requirements so you can't really buy it ready to fit.

Most horsebox manufacturers or general lorry body builders should be able to construct it for you. You are probably best going to an event and have a look around to see what you like and take lots of pictures to show the person who is going to build it for you. It can all vary in cost and style depend on what you go for.

You need to think about the weight of your lorry as this will restrict what size and style you can go for. you still need to be able to carry horse carriage and all equipment for 2 or more days away.

http://www.theawningcompany.co.uk/prod-equis.asp is one type which is quite light wait but can take up a lot of room inside your lorry with all the tarpolines and also can take a while to set up.

Something like this http://www.e-file-uk.com/horsebox/ can be alot quicker but will be much heavier.

Thanks Joe - looking for something loose box style - hoping I will also have room for a carriage section ... given the weather last year it seem sensible to be able to have the pony under cover?

Hi Vicky.
It depends wether you want your horse/pony tied up to the side of your lorry under a tarp to keep dry or for it to be loose. There is a discussion on this forum about side stabling but i can not find it. Club events allow electric fencing to be used to make a pen for those who are just starting up and for those that don't have any stabling on the side of there lorry.

Starting to get a bit keen now I'm afraid .... can any one answer my questions on side stabling. Such as can you fit it onto a ridge sided box, can you buy it ready to fit, who makes it and who could fit it ... and lastly (if anyone knows?) what would it cost?

Thanks for any help in advance :-)
