Not sure about the rules regarding juniors. In your position I would go onto www.britishdrivingsociety.co.uk go into contacts and call the secretary. She will be able to give you an answer to that question. Also it may be worth asking if there is someone in your area who could give you tips on showing etc and who would introduce you to other driving folk. Alternatively on the BDS website there are their affiliated clubs look up your area and get in contact with them. Or on the BHDTA website there is a list of affiliated clubs too. Mine is full of incredibly knowledgable folk who helped me get started. They may run junior training days. Do you have a spares kit for the carriage too? Sometimes judges ask to see these and they should be clean and neat. Best of luck

Thank you so far for your advice. I have bought the material for the apron, navy blue plain on top, nice smart check underneath. I will make as advised. Two more questions: my older daughter whom is 15 was going to sit with her (is that ok)? Secondly the class is a pleasure driving class (sorry about the error). If Nadia wears blue jodpurs (hasn't got blue trousers) is it still ok to wear her brown leather jod boots, hopefully apron should cover jods up but at least they would be the right colour? It is quite difficult we have had horses for years, but we have never driven and I don't know anyone that does, hence I am always asking questions, but Nadia is so keen I don't want to let her down.
Many thanks Nicolette

Hi, the apron length should be to the ankles, as Clare said, and should not go all the way round - but it should look like it does from the sides ie you should be able to tuck it underneath so it looks like a skirt while you are sitting on the carrige. And yes, an apron is required in private driving as it is not correct without.
For the outfit itself, it would be better for her to wear blue trousers (as it is not really correct to drive in riding gear), but as the apron will cover this it should be ok if necessary. You will also have to be on the carriage (as she is under 14) and should wear an outfit that compliments hers ie is blue/yellow.
For the scurry people usually wear what I would call 'presentation gear' so the same as for the private driving, but maybe check with the organisers? Also I'm pretty sure you have to wear an apron in scurrying too.
Hope this helps and you all have a great time :-)

Sorry edited to say - it doesn't go all the way round but as the name implies it is apron like. Length wize I think it should come down to just above the ankles. This is probably not being helpful have a look at the pictures.

Yes I think to be correct you should have an apron. If you don't feel like sewing try calling the number on www.jackinaboxcarriagedriving.co.uk they may have something in stock. I am not the right person to advise you as to the exact dimesions on what to make so perhaps someone else can be more helpful. It only covers the top of the legs and does up round the waist. You look a bit like you have neat rug over your legs. Have a look on carriage driving magazine website to see what they look like.
I am sure that they will be delighted to see a junior whip in the ring with or without an apron. The most important thing is to get out there and enjoy!!

Hi everyone, on Sunday my daughter Nadia (10) is going to do her first driving classes. It is at a local show (the 5 parishes in Fingeringhoe). She wants to enter two classes, firstly the private driving class and the scurry. I have a couple of questions on turnout for the classes. We only really have ridden clothing so far. For private showing class could she wear her showing outfit of: brown jod boots, pale lemon jodhpurs, lemon shirt, red tie, Plain navy jacket and navy hat with brown gloves. If this outfit is ok does she need me to make her a driving apron, (If so do they go all the way round the back or part way)? Secondly for the scurry class (they have been practising very hard!)can she wear her jods and boots and a rugby shirt with skull cap? Many thanks for all your help, I will run out of questions one day! Regards Nicolette
