Quick question - if I used electric fencing 10 x 10ft, (Like I do at club), does the horse have to be tied to the lorry still? I never electrify it and he doesn't escape. In terms of securing this to the lorry is a ring on the lorry either side of the pen sufficient. (i.e. a fixed ring attched to a bolt so it is very secure). Joe, I couldn't see your pictures, maybe it was my pc, but the links didn't work.

This has all been really useful. thank you very much everyone! Not quite sure yet exactly what I am going to do, but plenty of options here.
Many thanks Nicolette

You're so right Daniel! But our animals are just more amenable than most I reckon!! Let's face it, with what we throw at them during Training- there's not much they've not seen lol! ;-)

Driving trials seems to be the only horsey sport where people carry their own stables about with them.

Do we know something that they don't?

On the use of hurdles:

I've found to be very a practical, lightweight and simple solution.

Heavy duty plastic cable ties to be very good at keeping them tightly knitted together and to your horsebox (assuming there are suitable things you can tie them to).

And a small wire cutter (or pliers with wire cutter) are necessary for snipping them out when you've finished.

Alpaca hurdles are a bit taller (just over 4 foot) if you're worried about height. However, I've seen some set-ups where steel loops have been welded on the top of sheep hurdles to make it up.

Aluminium hurdles are more expensive, but much lighter, if you are worried about weight during transport and handling.

Some people do like to cover there hurdles with a curtain sider style fabric, but I've also seen plywood panels fixed to the horse side.

Not used any kind of cover as horse is too big, but horse did stand in stable during a hail storm at Catton this year with a New Zealand rug and a stoical expression.

Finally, electric fencing won't work if the horse is stood on rubber mats, as the horse will be insulated from the Earth so the current won't flow and no shock would be given.

Hi

I found this under the Rule Changes for 2011, which does say it's trying to make the transition from Club to National easier, however I don't know which 'circumstances' would allow it? I guess it's at organisers discretion?

5. Electric fencing will now be permitted in some circumstances but its use controlled. There is a limit of 10ft x10ft for paddocks and any fencing or barriers used must be firmly attached to the side of the lorry or trailer. Only one is permitted per competitor and competitors using electric fencing will be parked together. The intention is not to give everyone turnout for their horse but the BHDTA Council wish to make the transition up to National events from club ones as smooth as possible.

Hi Nicolette, I use sheep hurdles, a pop-up 3mx3m gazebo and eva matting. The two horses I've housed in this manner have coped fine with it although the strong winds we had at Sandringham did some damage to the gazebo so I had to take it down, but he was ok as he was rugged up- just that the bedding got soggy! I can't see what the problem is with electric fencing myself as I use that at Club events and it makes life so much easier. There's less weight on the wagon, its quicker to erect and dismantle and the horses have more respect for it. Plus it's safer if, God forbid, there should be a runaway in the wagon park. I shudder to think of a loose turnout colliding with a sheep hurdle pen but what choice is there? I can't have side stabling fitted to my wagon as it would make it overweight so I'm stuck with the hurdles for now. I wish electric fencing was allowed personally. ( must say though, at the 3 Nationals I've been to this year, I have seen quite a few electric fence pens!! )

16. The ground beneath all temporary stabling, pens, electric
fence enclosures and ground where horses/ponies are tied
to the side of lorries for an extended period of time must be
protected by matting. Any perforated or permeable matting
must also have a waterproof membrane below it and
bedding on top.

Horses and ponies must be either tied to a lorry or be in a portable stable with matting to help prevent ground damage. You can get a heavy duty tarpauline and attach the rings to hooks on the side of a wagon to make a roof as rain shelter and have your pony tied to the side of the lorry or go to the expence of getting a propper side stabling made to attach onto the side of the lorry.
Here is my stabling i have used for 3 yrs now, I have also just ordered sides and fronts and a door pannnel in the same pvc tarpauline

The tarp roofs can be ordered from http://www.unionindustries.co.uk/trading/tarps_pvc.htm based in Leeds

These take no room up at all and can be put up in 5-10 mins

I think at nationals you are not allowed electric tape and posts to house your pony? If this is correct I also think you can use sheep hurdles instead. A few questions - for those of you that don't have side stabling, what do you do? Do they get their hooves caught in the bars of hurdles? Are you allowed to put a structure over the sheep pens like a form of gazebo to keep pony dry? Exactly what type of matting do you use on the ground, rubber, EVA or other? I am trying to be prepared for next year. My preferred option is side stabling but I think it's going to be too much money. Thanks for your help, Nicolette
