Hi Dean We all seem to have our own methods and ways of bringing a horse into work. I tend to keep mine ticking over right through winter as i do teach all year round so it's easier to have a few horses fit and can manage an hour out on a drive. Once feb/March arrives the one i will use to compete gets clipped out and starts to work more. This year is diffrent though as i have a nw horse 6yo coming out to compete so its all new for him and me to see how he is going to be. We did do indoor winter comps but i thought the arena inside was to small and i couldnt get him to go forward enough for me. We will see once we get to the outdoor events |

Thanks Naomi I took my nephew around the field on the carriage on Sunday with Teddy doing about 15 circles. Teddy was sweating a lot. So yesterday I walked him on the lead for 3 miles. He is A Dartmoor Hill Pony under 5years of age and seems to get fit quick. I'm just so surprised that I cannot find anything on the internet! |

Hi Dean, I would normally work on the programme of, do a weeks walking for every month your horse has had off, walking is great for fitness and building up muscles. Then gradually start to add in bursts of trot work, week by week increasing the time of trotting. Start off in straight lines and then as your pony gets fitter then I would start doing some work in the school. Some ponies come back into fitness quite well but others that may be a little older, or have a previous injury, may take longer. Gauge it on how your pony responds and as long as you remember to start off slowly and increase the work week by week you should be on the right track. If you have a local trainer or vet they should be able to guide you, especially if they know your pony. |
