I would look at two things the action of your horse when driving out and the trimming of your horses feet. The mare we had was hard on the toes and that was because she did not work properly from behind and therfore did not pick up her front feet. I would be worried about this level of wear on the toes and the ensueing damage it may cause to you horses feet. Hardening is done by welding the shoe in a specific area you don't use any metal just the weld rod(a hardening one i Assume,if you want to know more just ask)This should be carried out by a knoledgable blacksmith. We have had both hand made and off the peg shoes, all hot shod and i would say the hand mades last slightly longer.

David could you tell me more about this welding. I have found it is the toes on the hinds that go quickly.

We are only covering approx 30-35 miles per week on the roads and this is enough to wear the toes down within 2 weeks.

Cheers Dawn

We have a 13hh fell pony, and we use english shoes which appear to be harder but a tad more expensive. We manage to get 10 weeks from them, normally it is only the 'toe' that stops them being refitted. Our pony has slow growing hoof that helps and only 50% of our driving is on tarmac

We had a mare who was very hard on shoes and to us wore them out very quickly. She driven was out every day doing approx 50 miles per week, shoes would last her 4 weeks. At present all our horses last 6-8 weeks that is working mainly on roads ridden and driven 5-6 times a week. Driving 50 miles a week last year we got about 6 weeks from a set they were not worn through at that point but needed to be changed.
If nothing proves to be wrong with the way your horse is going, i would suggest what we have done in the past, if there is a specific area of wear on the shoe, get your blacksmith to harden that area of the shoe with weld, this has proved very succesful. Another usefull thing is to use frost nails or road nails.
Good Luck
David

Just a question, how long does a set of shoes last you? I have found that a set of shoes lasts me about 2 weeks. This is going out 3 times in the carriage each week for 1 1/2 hrs each time. The other days are usually schooling in the arena.

At £60 a time it is expensive, at the moment he is shod with standard shoes, are there any other types of shoe that would last longer or do I just have to put up with shelling out my pennies? lol
