Hi Kate, wearing your hacking jacket should be fine - if you want to 'un-rideryfy' it (I just made that word up!) you could always go for a nice, high necked blouse in a toning or contrasting colour (you know, the sort with a neck which stands up with a bit of a frill on it?) Standing presentation at pre-novice club level is as much about safety and 'appropriateness' these days so you shouldn't be marked down for wearing a nice velvet riding hat. Charity shops are definitely a good idea - especially if you can visit those in an 'upmarket' area, where you can often get designer labels for just a few quid! Good luck, look forward to seeing you at Allerton!

Thank you! Was just curious- it's very much like ridden showing, Ru was ridden champion at a show the week before last and unplaced the next week! I never know why we do different... We now have the extending axels sorted, greased and working well after an NEDTL training day on Sunday, loads of help and support there and I'm looking at Allerton Park now in July... Thanks again!

Always remember every event the judges differ, very irritating if you change something and the next judge has a different opinion, that's what its all about!!.But always annoying when the judges write no comment next to your 6 and you wonder what was wrong. True you can go and ask but most of us are busy the rest of the day. My driving jacket is an old Marks and Spencer washable 3/4 length fashion jacket navy blue, but i would wear what you have and are comfortable in for the first event, we started in Peacocks brown pin strip!, as you progress you can get ideas and change if you want. Don't forget the cleaning of your vehicle, horse, harness, Axles out, etc more to think about than clothes LOL, enjoy it's such fun.

Hi Kathleen, it's hard to say how much exactly was deducted for the outfit, but looking at my paperwork I'd gone down 2-3 points on my usual score.

Hi all, just thought I'd mention...I was wearing a hacking jacket, apron and hard hat for the dressage at Ashfields and was marked down at the standing presentation (pre-novice) for being dressed as a rider rather than as a whip!

Hi Kathleen, When i started my daughter and i wore our riding gear, as a Junior Ruth wore her hard hat driving or sitting on the back as did i, as driver we just wore trousers and apron, with hard hat.We where never told off! and i have always felt that for novice drivers this is simplier than worrying about what to wear and surely safer? Drivers are being encouraged to wear back protectors, and although dressage is possibly not as dangerous as marathon,at many shows with horses accidents often occur warming up or in the collecting ring. As a new open driver i am surcumbing to the lost wedding look, and was told at one event that riding attire was not suitable for driving, however it seems very popular at club level and is practical and easy to acquire. If the hard hat was encouraged for the dressage at club level it would make everyone having a go surely feel less self conscious about what to wear.

Thank you! im happy to wear a soft hat- i think ill get my first couple under my belt before i do though... ive never seen an adult in a hard hat so wasnt sure where i stood- but will wear it and the hacking jacket to start with.

I know what you mean about being slobbered on- i have a special cheap tweed for showing my youngster in hand- it gets soaked through with his drool. Thanks for your help- that is a lovely pair!

Hi, Kathleen, people often ask these questions.

Please don't get too worried although, of course, you want to try to get it right. My personal view is that, as you've got a lovely chestnut horse and a green carriage you are on to a winning formula. I also like your hacking jacket and that orange tie stands out beautifully. IMHO you could go with the velvet hat or, if you are ok about wearing a soft hat, try a black or tweedy trilby-type hat, or a panama for sunnier days? I get my jackets (and some hats) from ebay and haunt the local Oxfam and charity shops for jackets under £30 that I won't mind being slobbered on (by the horse). (Always try it on, sit down, stick your arms out straight in front of you and wiggle them. If it's tight across the shoulders, don't buy it.)

There's a photo album "what to wear" on my facebook page for Inharness magazine. I think Fred Pendlebury might be a nice example for you although he has navy where you have green.

You don't need a presentation vehicle! I recommend three-phase vehicle drivers go "country", that is more tweedy, and not "town", more formal.

Best advice - avoid the "mother of the bride hat"!

Aprons - you can make your own or get one from Jack In A Box, Pony & Carriage, and other suppliers who support our sport. Remember to wear it over your jacket.

Don't forget you and your groom should wear brown gloves. (These are just a few thoughts and my own views - intended to be helpful!)

hi! as a new driver im busy trying to get together everything i need for HDT. Im getting pretty much stuck on a dressage outfit. I like the high neck jackets that i see about on the circuit (like lead rein mum's jackets) but having searched for months on ebay and around the forums, there's none coming up at a decent price or without the diddy childs jackets that come with them (kind of useless for me!) so what do you wear? where did you get it from?
here's my boy at home- id prefer a tweed for him with him being a M and M, what do you recon? it's holding me up as i cant buy my apron and hat until i have a jacket! or can i use a hacking jacket?

and ridden- with my favorite hacking jacket!
