Alan - thank you for that. I did not realise Alysha's carriage did not have springs, however the problem remains. From her original post, it appears that it's not that she cannot adjust the shafts, it's when someone gets in the carriage, it becomes un-level.

Indispension units (the rubber-type suspension that some carriages use) can have the same problem as springs, in that one becomes "weaker" than the other. When a load is applied, i.e. a person getting in, it will compress more than the other one.

It is still worth while trying the test I mentioned earlier, to get a better idea of what is happening. If a suspension unit is weak, it may have to be replaced.

A Bellcrown won't have leaf springs it will be rubber sprung. The probable reason for one shaft being higher than the other is adjustment. The shafts adjust for length and height with two pinch bolts on each socket.

Trish - I think she's talking about left-right level, rather than front-to-back. Correct me if I'm wrong. You are correct in that the shafts should just gently "float" in the tugs when you're properly balanced.

Alysha - check the springs on your carriage. We had this problem once. A leaf on one of the springs had broken and, even though the carriage was level with nobody on board, it would list to one side when the people got in.

Sometimes, it may be hard to see if a spring is broken - especially if it's one of the centre leaves that has cracked or if they have many layers of paint on them. Sometimes you may just have a weak spring, without a physical break.

If your driver and passenger swap sides, is the effect the same ? Is it more or less pronounced ? What happens if the driver sits in the middle on their own ?

Normally you would expect some slight list towards the side with the heavier person, but this should not be excessive and certainly not as bad as you describe.

Vic.

You need to check your balance, there shouldn't be any weight on the pony's back at all. Moving the seat back will do this. The shafts should just play in the tugs when moving along.

Hello
I have finally got my driving pony and I just had a few questions to ask
1. When she is in trap the shafts do not sit level in the tugs. I mean one tug is lower than the other on the side that the heavier person sits. I have levelled up the tugs before we start but as soon as the heavier person gets in it goes further down on one side. Is this normal and is going to cause and strain on her back and if so how can I correct it ? . I have a two wheel belcrown.
The other question I have is will a two wheel belcrown with back step be a suitable carriage to attend the Ashfield’s junior camp with?
Thank you
Alysha
