Thanks Emma. Yes, people interested have to sign up for selection. The scoring is 1 point for a win, 2 for second etc, with lowest total counting: "UK COMPETITOR SELECTION PROCEDURE 1. Prior to the first selection event competitors must state their interest in writing and sign the declaration agreement. 2. There will be four selection events, the best three results to be counted - to be considered for team selection a competitor must complete three events. 3. Points to be awarded as final event placing ie. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points etc. (a) Points will be awarded to declared selection candidates only: ie. If 1st placed competitor at a selection event is not a declared candidate, one point will be awarded for 2nd place, etc. (b) Should there be an equality of points scored, the marathon scores at mutually contested events will resolve placings." They don't necessarily get together for training. I think it's not really a team sport like football, say, more a team of individuals. The pony scheme 2006-7 was quite different with selectors selecting (on undisclosed criteria) and team trainers.... |

Thanks Mike! Everything is making a bit more sense now, as a newcomer it's hard to wade through the pages of rules and guidelines without getting sore eyes and spinning head..... So the lowest 3/4 scores are chosen, I guess at some point in the past the drivers have registered their interest in travelling to the champs? Once they are chosen, and before they go, do they get together and train? Thanks for taking the time to make things clearer, I have to say that your 'better than a sack of potatoes' is sitting in our tackroom and is a constant help to someone just starting. If only everything else was as easy! |

Emma, it's late and I may not have understood you properly, sorry if so: the recent world championship at Warka, Poland I'm thinking of was for horse pairs and for that the UK drivers were chosen by ranking their best 3 positions at 4 designated UK selection events. You can see the points and the scheme on the BHDTA site - looks like the same scheme for the forthcoming singles in Poland 2008, some points already displayed - click UK Team selection - or on this link: http://www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk/points/2007/team_selection_2007.htm On top of that the FEI require drivers & horses qualified by getting a dressage score of 65 or less at a big event: "2008 - World Horse Championships (Singles) – Jarantow (POL) 28th August – 31st August Drivers and all horses must successfully complete all three competitions at a combined National or FEI International Driving Event in their own class and, in doing so, achieve a result of 65 penalty points or less in the Dressage Competition - Test 9, as outlined in art 901 of the FEI Rules for Driving. This criteria to be achieved in current year of the Championship, up to the date for nominated entries, or during 2007." see FEI qualifications

I'm sure its a question that those who've been around a lot longer than me can answer easily, but in the case of the single horses, what process selects the drivers for Poland? Is is the best overall results that count at qualifying events? Do the 'top' people have to achieve a certain standard or percentage in the dressage, or is overall results all that counts? And in the event of joint scores, does the higher dressage/marathon score or reliability count? Am merely trying to learn the ropes, and don't have an immediate interest...although you never know!!! ;o) Thanks in advance. |
