I have a brollar made by Schroder for my 13.2hh pony and she loves it! It allows her lots of movement in her shoulder and she can really push into it when she needs too. Mine is leather and I use it for all 3 phases of competition and also for everyday use at home. Janet it right, ideally you want a good quality leather one that fits nicely and you can use all the time. If it fits right your pony may love it! Not sure about synthetic ones but i reckon its worth spending a little more to get a decent leather one.

I have a brollar for my 14.3 cob and its very heavy. I only use when pulling something very heavy like a wagon or logs or harrowing. I use the ordinary breast plate for driving my Belcrown carriage as its light.

I do have a broiler for sale if you would like to contact me. Leather and under £100

I use a leather brollar collar at home and i find it to not fit quite right on my 15.2h hackney, it fits all my other horses i have fine with a good draught line to the swingle tree. The brollar collar works just like a full collar but fits the shoulders better i think than a full collar.

I would think a big 'pro' would be that there is nothing different for the horse at an event - some drivers only ever use their 'good' full collar harness for dressage or showing.
The first 'con' that comes to mind is that you would have to clean it to presentation standard before the dressage and after the marathon but there are plenty of drivers who have to do that.
You can find really nice fine brollars - Ian Bertram has a lovely one for his Hackney stallion.
IME the nicest ones are leather - I don't think a synthetic one would look good at all (and I use synthetic harness for all 3 phases) however modern harness manufacturers are improving all the time.

Hi Alison

You have posted an excellent question!

And I do hope others will join in and give you feed back of their experience, unfortunately our hands on experience of brollars is very limited , so in this never ending learning game we too would love to hear what other say.

But we will have a go at kicking off on this topic

For a brollar, cross between full collar and breast to be effective and comfortable, good design and measurement are very important - including looking at the angle of traces down to your carriage. You could end up with a situation of a lovely neck shoulder fit but the tongue of the brollar where the traces fit; excessively angling down distorting the brollar defeating the whole object, this effect can be seen also on some not so well shaped breast collars, heights of carriage swingle tree etc. need to be taken into consideration, When I say effective I am mainly regarding a better draft line.

Although we have not driven using a brollar ourselves, from our observations and chats to others a good quality measured brollar can be effective and look nice suitable for all three phases but they don’t come cheap.

We also have not come across a synthetic brollar elsewhere, we have been discussing the possibilities of producing an all synthetic brollar but this could be a little way off yet.

I wonder If Mike sees this thread if it would be possible to move it into the general chat section

Has anyone ever used a Brollar for all 3 phases if so are there any pros & cons?

Also does anyone know where I can get a synthetic Brollar I can only find leather ones?

Alison
