Oops - sorry! I must now reveal my own ignorance... Back in the day before glue was so strong, a long piece of U-shaped rubber was fed into a specially channel on the outside of the wheel by a man with a special machine and the rubber was gripped by the channel and it miraculously stayed on without glue. Polish and many other modern carriages have (as I understand it) their rubber tyres vulcanised/heated on to the flat rim of the wheel and some incredibly strong magic potion sticks the rubber on to the wheel. This worked pretty well for us until somewhere between obstacle 5 and 6 at the Midlands Championships, when we resorted to duck tape and cable ties to get us home! Samll wheels and a lot of sideways pressure? Does anyone else have a better explanation, please?

Oh super, thanks Fiona but I am showing my ignorance here but I don't know what clincher and vulcanised mean! I want some new rubber for all 4 wheels, they have flat rubber on them but it needs replacing. Many thanks Nicolette |

Hi, Nicolette, Eastern Vulcanising Services - near Diss - can re-rubber the glued-on kind and it might be worth asking if they do clincher. Speak to Ray - 01953 681889 or 07786 704220. I think Jon Tiplady in Martlesham has a clincher-type re-rubbering machine (?) 01394 383037 Otherwise Rene Schoop helped me a while ago with one that was vulcanised, somewhere near Newcastle, I think. You can send wheels by courier - see www.senditnow.co.uk - for £10.50/two days. p.s. I gather (from personal experience) that it's virtually impossible to stick old rubber back on because it becomes bigger than the wheel rim! |
