You raise an interesting point here Douglas - rain or no rain! I did a dressage of 52 and came second by just over 4 pens at Allerton but as there were only two in the class only the winner qualified. However, at another qualifier (which I did not compete at) with several in the class, the ticket went down the line to 7th place where the person concerned did a dressage of 75+ (can't remember exactly but it was definitely the high 70s. I'm not one to grouse about 'that's not fair' cos life in general ain't fair but it does question the current system. I have one more chance to qualify (at Grangewood) - with a very limited budget I have stuck to regionals only - so keeping my fingers crossed. Yes Jane, it's raining in Lincolnshire too! |

With the results of Holker now in, it would appear that at least 143 drivers will have qualified to enter the National Championships. The BHDTA funds will benefit from this but it raises several thoughts from this Grumpy Old Man Is it becoming too easy to get a ticket to Windsor ? Should the Class Structure be re-visited ? ( Mindful of some very low entries in some classes) Should there be a limit on the number of entries compatible with demands on stewards ?. The following table shows the Qualifiers and the total number of competitors awarded points during the season.
| | | HORSES | | | PONIES | | Qualifiers | Competitors | % | Qualifiers | Competitors | % | | Singles | | | | | | | | Novice | 10 | 13 | 77% | 10 | 15 | 67% | | Intermediate | 12 | 20 | 60% | 6 | 11 | 55% | | Open | 12 | 21 | 57% | 13 | 17 | 76% | | Advanced | 9 | 10 | 90% | 6 | 7 | 86% | | | | | | | | | Pairs | | | | | | | | Open | 11 | 14 | 79% | 9 | 13 | 69% | | Advanced | 10 | 14 | 71% | 4 | 4 | 100% | | | | | | | | | Tandems | 4 | 4 | 100% | 4 | 5 | 80% | | Teams | 12 | 14 | 86% | 11 | 12 | 92% | | | | | | | | | Total | 80 | 110 | 73% | 63 | 84 | 75% | | An alternative method of qualifying might be based on a points system which recognised the number of entries in the class and the number of events entered. The top six in the sixteen classes would then be invited to Windsor ( 96 entries at 4 minute intervals means 6hours 24 minutes continuous attendance by our ageing stewards in perhaps difficult weather conditions) |
