The official answer is: once a groom has dismounted in an obstacle, to avoid further penalties they need to be back on by:
- the next compulsory turning flag, or
- the finish of E or
- the next obstacle,
whichever comes first.

Advice is: the groom is best to wait until the whole turnout has crossed the finish line of the obstacle, then remount. (This avoids the extra penalties they'd get if they had to dismount again having remounted before then. If you're sure you won't have to dismount again, you can get back on before).

The rules are:
945.6.1 In Sections A, D and outside the Obstacles in Section E, Grooms and Competitors are not allowed to dismount unless the Vehicle is stationary. If the Vehicle is not stationary, either or both Groom(s) dismounting will incur 10 penalties. The Competitor dismounting will incur 20 penalties.

945.6.2 The Competitor and all Grooms must be on the Vehicle as it crosses the Start and Finish Line and passes through the Compulsory Turning Flags in each Section. Failure to do so incurs 10 penalty points for grooms and 20 penalty points for Competitor, on each occasion.

There is also

945.6.3 If warranted due to the condition of the terrain, the Technical Delegate and the President of the Ground Jury may permit Grooms in Competitions for Ponies to run behind their Vehicle on designated parts of the Course only

which could mean the groom could stay dismounted even longer than above - rare!

(956 covers grooms in cones, where the groom must remount before the next obstacle [cone or box]).

Alice - to post in this section please register on the forum - email me or use the form on the BHDTA site. Sorry for the delay in answering - didn't pick it up as it was in For Sale and Wanted.

Look in the rules section (BHDTA website) and read Rule no. 946.3 - page 83 AND rule 956.5 - page 105. It makes it all clear.

The rules don't force grooms to be back on before passing through the finish, I would imagine for safety reasons... however you will incur penalties and therefore most people will choose to get the grooms back on before leaving the obstacle.

Now I've actually looked in the rule book, other than saying that the whole turnout must pass through the section start and finish and ctfs, I cannot find any reference to when the groom has to get back on in the case you cite! Hmm, try the Rules Committee? Please let us know what the answer is?

Thank you for the replies but like me you are both uncertain about the rule (Guest "I think" Fiona "I'm not sure". How do I find someone who writes the rules to ask if they know.
Please someone must have the knowledge.

Yes, the groom need not follow the carriage (except for the amusement of the onlookers - the water obstacles are best for this). Some say it's best for the groom to stay down. But get him/her back on the carriage before you leave the obstacle - I'd vote for before the nose of the horse crosses the finish line to be on thesafe side, but I'm not sure! Then get the groom a pair of grippier gloves...

(Example might be when you have a water-hating horse and have to pass through the water more than once. If you put your groom down to lead horse through the water the first time, it could be best to leave the groom down to lead the horse through again...) Hope this helps!

Penalties are incurred each time a groom dismounts, and (I think?) for leaving an obstacle without all grooms on the carriage, so generally grooms will jump back on as the driver is leaving the obstacle (usually without stopping!).

Sorry if this is in the wrong place I tried in General but it said I was not allowed. All I want is an answer to a question please (I am new to trials).
If a groom falls off in an obstacle the rule says they do not have to chase after the carriage. I am not clear from the rules when they should get back on, do they have to be on before the carriage or ponies nose goes over the finish line...therefore making the carriage stop in the obstacle to allow remounting. Or can they get back on after the carriage has crossed the finish line?
