the lip strap would be caught on the pole head or leader bars too easily. In the "old days" driving revolved around teams and pair turnouts- hence no lip strap holes on liverpools.ie easily caught up poles and crab heads not shafts. We now use bits with bars underneath to stop the liverpool bit shank looping over the rein of the horse next to him some are fixed metal but recently a lot of drivers use plastic tubing which will pull off in a crisis.

Thanks for that, Chris. Still wondering why they are not used in Driving though. Is there a reason?. My reluctant backstepper is a Riding Instructor and competes in Affiliated Dressage so I keep getting these questions thrown at me and sometimes I struggle to come up with a logical answer as sometimes there seems to be a huge world of difference between the two disciplines. Incidentally, Willie, My horse, is healing up nicely after your excellent care at Tutbury! Thanks again.

the ring on the curb chain for the lip strap should be removed on a driving horse's curb. This is why driving bits do not have an attachment for a lip strap.
also it is useful to either close one curb hook with pliers to prevent loosing the chain or use some tape to close the hook, this also helps stop the hook catching on pole heads or team bars.Which could cause an unpleasant accident.

Could any of you driving sages shed some light as to why Liverpool Driving bits never seem to have facilities for attaching a lip strap? It was always drummed into me during my formative Riding years that I should never use a curb chain without a lip strap. The lip strap being there in order to prevent the curb chain riding up the jaw bone and keeping it in the curb groove. Also handy for keeping the curb chain attached should the loops come off the hooks. I'd be very interested and grateful for any responses. Thanks.
