Hi, Gail, horses driven in a multiple - a pair, tandem or team - sometimes have bits with a bottom bar, which is what I think you describe. Yes, it is to prevent the reins getting caught.
Some people use a short piece of garden hose which serves the same purpose if less elegantly.

Hi

I noticed on the near side wheeler of Wilf Bowman-Ripley's team the horse has a U-shaped item on his bit. I understand this is to stop the leader's reins getting stuck in his bit. Can someone explain this and why than is it only on one wheeler or maybe I missed something?
