Thank you to all who were kind enough to ring, email and post their ideas, suggestions and experiences. My husband and I got the carriage re-balanced, made some alterations to the harness and took things very slowly.
Merlin was very much more chilled, he seems to have got himself in a tizzy over something and just needed lots of reassurance today. He was a VERY good boy.
I am wondering why I didn't take up driving long ago, everybody is fabulous and so helpful.
