Karen, I can't imagine how you must feel! Thank heaven for this Forum though. It must give just a tiny bit of solace to be able to explain yourself in Public. It's a lesson for us all, but I'm so sorry for you that you had to learn it the hard way. Here's to next Season- I wish you every good luck! Above all- carry on enjoying this wonderful sport! :-)

Karen - so sorry that this happened to you at the trials I had no idea - we watched you every step of the way and nothing should take away from your stunning performance particularly with the exciting finish to the league tables. I guess i am paranoid about these things having been involved in eventing in the past but anyone can get caught out - hope you look forward to next year and doing it all again and perhaps we can give you some better competition x

How very unfortunate that this happened to you, especially in your first season. I hope it hasn't put you off.
It's truly amazing the every day things some people use which are banned substances (Sudacreme is a classic) and it pays to be scrupulous about the items we have in our First Aid kits and what our vets are using and prescribing.
I attended a seminar run by the BEF a couple of years ago where we were shocked at the strictness of the testing - e.g. if a horse has been in a temporary stable before yours, has been given bute, peed on the straw and then your horse eats some of the straw that was left, the bute will show in a test on your horse! It's something we should all be taking seriously and I think it would be an idea for BC to offer something similar to members to help them make correct choices regarding every day drugs and medication.
Your vet may not be au fait with all banned substances however I asked mine to make sure anything he prescribes is ok for competition use and he has been brilliant, making sure any lotions, potions and creams are safe for use under FEI rules or well within the withdrawal periods.
Ultimately it is our own responsibility and we need to be aware of the consequences. This has been a horrible thing for you to experience and you have my sympathy.

Following the statement regarding the National Novice Championship disqualification, I wanted other competitors to be aware of the implications, that can happen when competing at any BEF controlled event.
My pony was clipped on the Tuesday PRIOR to the National Championships he was given Sedalin which was supplied from my vet. Nowhere on the packaging does it state it is a banned FEI substance or that you should not compete within a certain period. So when my pony was blood tested after the dressage I was not concerned. I now know, that this is not the case, and quite frankly it never crossed my mind. But ignorance or stupidity (call it what you want) are not accepted by the BEF.
What had been a wonderful first season competing at Nationals, (with my pony who never stops trying) has turned into a very expensive mistake, the fine of £1,500.00 imposed by the BEF and the loss of the title has been very distressing and I apologise to my fellow competitors in the Novice pony class.
I urge any competitor prior to competing to check the BEF/FEI controlled and banned substance list.
