Thanks so much guys. We am going on Sunday to Bennington! My daughters and I are both having a lesson with Amanda - its her fault we are into driving! My husband and I stayed with her in Lockerbie and I had a lesson, as our pony was broken to drive before we had her, and now I'm hooked. We went to the April's Try Driving and both daughters shared a lesson .They had grins from ear to ear! What genuinly nice people at Bennington too. Am very tempted by Funbug but struggling to justify spending £2000 to non - horsey hubbie when I might need 3 phase within 18months :-)

Caroline, you do not need to 2 seperate vehicles and most of us who start off only use 1 carriage for all our needs. The thing you need to consider is safety first, then what you want to do with your turnout. You could have a 2 or 4 wheeler and there advantages / disadvantages for both options. For a small pony you do need to consider the weight s/he's going to pull and if you and your 2 girls are going to be on the carraige at the same time as well as if you are going to be on the carraige on your own. Where do you live? Have a chat with your local carrriage makers as they can advice you and your local club can also offer guidnace. We have a 2 wheel carriage for our 13hh pony which has adjustable balance so depending on the driver/passenger we can adjust to suit her- there is also a detachable back step so you can add that if required - it was reasonable to buy 2nd hand and suits our pony, my 8yr old daughter and me to drive. Our club is www.mdtg.co.uk - The Midlands Driving Trials Group

Hi

We drive the same vehicle for exercise and competing.. A Fenix Flyer which is a 3 phase 4 wheel vehicle which will do indoors and club events (and national as well) it has a single seat for competitions and an interchangeable double seat for when you want it and a backstep. You could use any make 3 phase 4 wheeler in this way. What you need to make sure is that it has the seating that you want and has extending axles for the club events.

Have a look at our website which has pictures of our ponies in several Flyers being driven by my duaghter from age 10 onwards. www.birchcourtstud.com

However I'm not saying that its safe to use for driving a pony out on its own especially a novice one. Not something I would ever do as you can never tell what might happen, but I'm sure there are those that do drive on their own.

hope that helps

Sue

I wonder if anyone can help me. We have a novice 12.3hh pony who we would like to compete indoors initially and then possibly at club level outdoors. We need to buy a vehicle which is suitable but also safe for me to drive on my own occasionally as my friend is not always available to come with me, and for my childen to drive (obviously supervised) they are 9 and 11 and are having lessons. Do I need 2 vehicles to do this? A friend suggested a funbug which I know I can do indoors with but I have been to Forest Edge to watch a few times and have never seen one there. Am so confused! Do most of you guys have an exercise vehicle and a competition vehicle?
We have managed so far with an unnamed exercise cart but it is not well balanced and I don't want to put pony off.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
