Hi Laura Jane i raced standardbreds professionaly for a lot of years, when i started driving trials i competed with a pacer and then a half bred. There are a lot of things to consider, temperament, gate, whether it was raced with a overcheck, whether it raced with a headpole. These horses are tough and fast and are good fun, but to compete seriously they need a lot of re training as they naturaly push into pressure which is not what you want for dressage, hope this helps, if you need any further help give me a ring. 07968871450 |

Hi guys. Thanks for the help. I've had a look and got In touch with 2 people. I'm starting lessons after Christmas. And I'm going to come along to a local event. Very excited as I've wanted to do it for years, and now I've got my perfect equine partner to do it with. He's a star and will really try for u :-). And yes I'd love to do a bit of competing Fiona eventually. But that would only be once I'm at least compitent at driving lol. Thanks again and I'll let u know how I get on :-) |

Hi, Laura Jane, what a lovely horse for any driver! As Louise says, there's a list of clubs on this site - contact the secretaries of those near you and have a chat. There is a winter series of indoor driving events held all over the UK - the North West/Chester is a very active area with events for drivers of all levels, including beginners. Although competing might be some way in the future if you are just learning, if you go along to a local event and meet people, they will be able to help you find a good trainer and get started, I'm sure. See the www.indoordriving.co.uk to find an event near you - contact the event organiser and say what you are looking for and someone is likely to help. Lots of people who drive indoors in the winter do so outdoors in the summer - showing, BDS, or driving trials - it's a great activity to start - and everyone says how friendly we are! Do let us know how you get on? Best wishes, Fiona (Suffolk) |

Hey Laura Jane. Have a look on this website for local Affiliated Clubs - Chester HDTG or North West Driving Club. Contact their secretaries - both are great Clubs and very helpful. They will put you in touch with someone in your local area who can help you out. Good luck! |

Hi guys. I'm new to all of this, but would love to learn to drive. I have a beautiful standardbred gelding, ex harness racer, that I would love to drive (leisure & small competitions). He obviously knows what he's doing but I don't lol. Is there anywhere in the north west I can learn? Thanks :-) |
