Hi, Helen, so long as the harness is in good condition and well fitting and the whole turnout is safe and suitable (not too big or small a carriage for the pony), I'd say go driving! If you want to go with the British Driving Society or to start doing horse driving trials, a traditional set of harness with breeching (the strap round the horse's rear which acts as brakes) would be more suitable and it would probably have different tugs (the loops that attach the shafts to the harness pad). There are a number of reputable suppliers and you'll probably save money and get a better fit if you go to a carriage driving specialist - with your pony, if possible - or get them to come to you. They will fit the harness to the pony and the carriage and it needn't be expensive. Have a look at the photos on this site and on www.indoordriving.co.uk or www.mikewatts.com for plenty of ideas, I suggest. (You don't need a four-wheeler to start doing driving trials, a safe two-wheeler, like this one, is fine.) We are a very friendly lot - why not find an indoor driving event near you and go along on foot? Ask about any harness you like the look of - you'll get lots of advice. Please let us know how you get on? |
