A small note to Enda especially - I hope you won't mind me writing this, but just in case anyone thinks of using, even for training, a running or other type of martingale, please make sure that it cannot get tangled up with the reins, the bit or the shaft ends. This may sound unlikely but it can make a horrible mess if it happens!
(And Ginny's Jack is fabulously fast in the obstacles!)
Safe driving... Fiona

My pony Jack was broken to drive i assume by am i allowed to say travelling people, and they really know how to make a pony go forward, but of course we require them to Walk! do collected trot and canter. He was and still is(a bit) frightened of the whip and considers it a speed aid It took my daughter and i a lot of work and time to get jack to walk he would only do everything in flat out trot, he does not pace. We cracked it by one of us leading, walking a long side for walk and halt, he still is not good at standing, at 15!.But always does the walk times. Canter under saddle in the arena took as many months. He was mad to lunge would charge at you!, and hated being long reined, something i now do with sucess. On hind sight i should have ridden him in blinkers as i think he had only been roughly driven and was terrified of his surroundings with full sight. Our driven dressage has always been rubbish due to his 2 fingers up to any form of slow work,(his ridden dressage is quite passable but being croup high finds legthen stride very hard, however driven obstacles he loves and is awesome, perseveer, sadly they can't tell us what they have been taught. I know pacing ponies make good pleasure driving animals but again they sometimes half pace/ canter in the arena and the judges don't like that either. Not rellevant to your problem but most of us enjoy having a go with what we have, i know mines better than 10years ago, and yes you can make a silk purse out of a pigs ear!!, He is 200% on the road in any situation, you can't always get everything. So keep going.

i have a 14.1 gelding which i have owned since Oct 2010 and he has been very good to drive.
one quirk that he has is once i have harnessed him and get on the exercise cart turn him to head out of the yard he turns into a different horse!
He wants to go flat out all the time and i am having to pull on him constantly. I have tried to slow him down at the beginning to walking pace but whet i do this he sometimes rears and am worried about him comming back over on the card and injuring himself.
I am wondering if has has been driven very fast in the past and all he knows is that when he is harnessed he has to go flat out. Also do you think if i use a martingale will this stop him rearing and running with his head too high ?

I think I would definatley go along the tracks you are, sounds like she has been driven in the wrong hands or nigel mansell owned her.

If she has a soft mouth it would be a shame to ruin that by constantly holding her back ( will end up wooden) I personally would strip back to basics and work on the long reining working on your voice, stopping and starting and keeping her mind focased on everything but trotting! If she has been driven like this for many years it may take time for her to break the habit !! I would also maybe throw in a few rein backs on start off ( longreining)empthasing on the voice aswell. She sounds like a fun mare to drive, best of luck with her. Out of interest what bit is she being driven in also?
