Patti and all I understand a response will be sent direct but in an effort to clarify. Please see response from Philip Bateman of the rules committee. Martyn FEI Position:- A Pessoa is not allowed: as if mis-used it is against the Welfare of the Horse. It is a gadget that produces hyperflextion which is not allowed. I agree that in skilled hands a Pessoa is an aid to training, but I do mean skilled, and too often there is a lack of knowledge with these things, so there is a universal ban. Yes, side reins are allowed when lunging because they do not pull the horses head down into an un-natural position. Obviously if they were too toght the lunger would be asked to loosen them. |

Side reins are permissable as far as I know - I was told by a judge that this was the ONLY lunging aid that is allowed. It is debatable however as even side reins can be used badly and have a very restrictive effect on a horse. Given the number of people currently using them at events I think this rule needs clarifying. Can anyone help? |

I had this at Allerton last year. I was faced by the TD who drove over and asked me to remove my Passoa as no training aids are allowed to be used at events only at home. I have also not found and rule in any rule book apart from the 919.6. Leverage Devices. |

Thanks Mike, but a Pessoa would never be used when in harness - it is purely a lunging aid. Interesting rule though - I debated using a second rein on a lower slot in a case where a horse was very strong to give more control (or at least to get its attention!) a bit like a pelham. Looks like that would be a no no. |

Patti, I believe this rule: "919.4 Auxiliary Reins Auxiliary Reins (including any type of check reins) are not permitted when in harness." may be being interpreted to include a Pessoa - and other training aids which involve any extra connection to the reins/bit, and is being applied "at any ... time" at the driving event location - where any time may mean from the official opening of the stable field, though it's not clear. I'm sorry if this isn't very clear - perhaps someone else can find something clearer written down? |

During a chat at Ashfields I was told that it is not permitted to use a Pessoa at an event. The only rule I can find that might pertain to this is the following copied from the FEI rule book. 919.6. Leverage Devices All rings, terrets and/ or other devices which have an extreme leverage effect on the reins or bits are forbidden at any time within the Driving Event Location. A Pessoa MAY have an extreme leverage effect but surely this is only if it is badly used. The Pessoa is designed to reward the horse when it actively seeks a soft contact. It enables the horse to find its own balance and encourages a softer, rounder outline. Presumably if a Pessoa is not allowed then any other aids to lunging are not permitted either, for examples side reins, De Gogue, Harbridge etc. If this is the case it potentialy causes a severe disadvantage to those of us who cannot ride our horses at events. Can anyone clarify what the actual rule is? |
