As I steward I have always been told never to enter an obstacle whilst a competitor is in it. Over time I have seen a few things go wrong and I can tell you that this happens very quickly and stewards have been injured as well as competitors and horses. No one wants to accidents, no one wants injuries you just cannot put yourself at risk.

Amie,

Thanks for posting that; removing the bridle from the horse in the carriage is not acceptable and is specifically forbidden by the East Anglian CDG Ltd health and safety rules which say:

"Never remove the reins or any part of the bridle of your animal whilst it is harnessed to a vehicle."

Also, anyone who disobeys the reasonable instructions of a steward can be eliminated from an event.

Not the same incident but I was backstepping for my sister at the weekend, and we were at the halt before section E on the marathon. A fellow competitor took the bridle off the horse whilst it was still in the carriage. It had a headcollar and leadrope on but I felt this was very dangerous and very negligent. When the steward of Section E approached the competitor to let them know how dangerous this could be she simply said that she knew her horse! I am sorry but it isnt about YOUR horse it can be someone elses. It put everyone at the halt at risk, and the competitor was so blarse about it all. Any thoughts??

Hello, I have never done a driving trial but do like spectating. I saw something last weekend that I thought put the horses in danger. Can someone please tell me what, if anything, should have been done?

A horse pair was in an obstacle and knocked off a rail. The rail landed across a gap with a long nail pointing upwards right on the path the right hand horse was to take later in the obstacle. I asked an official if the pole should be moved but he said no. If the horse had trodden on the pole it would have got a serious injury. Maybe even had to be put down.
What is the official rule on things like this?
Thankfully the horse missed the nail by about 18 inches.
Thank you

Paul
