Thanks Geoff - that is most helpful. I now realise that I have seen them in the Pyrenees - thought they were Fell types. How are you so knowledgeable about the Merens? Friend takes delivery in a month's time so would be most grateful if you could attach a photo to my email address.....? It is maggy.barber@gmailZZZ.com (remove the ZZZ) cheers, Maggy |

The Mérens Pony is native to the Ariège Pyrenees, named after a village in the high mountains close to Andorra. The Mèrens horse has been used for work in the fields, ploughing and hauling. In Ariège, most of the breeders keep the horses in the open air year-round. Mèrens horses are now bred in other regions of France and even other countries, an authentic Mèrens is one who has run free in the high Pyrenees like his ancestors thousands of years ago. They are normally very placid but can take the mickey at times. I have pictures of the Merens working but do not know how to put pictures up on this forum. In many ways the resemble the Fell pony. A great friend has moved to France and intends to open a carriage driving centre there, especially incorporating facilities for disabled people. She has just bought a pair of French Meren ponies (black, 14h steady types) - anyone know anything about them? Now she is looking for a pairs carriage - not expensive, possibly second hand. France appears not to have a 'carriagelink' facility - anyone got any ideas for her?? Thanks, Maggy |
