What the hell is this sport comong to? Why do we have choice to carry a whip in Comp B now? The whip is an extention of are body and is a vital aid! If we have the choice not to carry it in comp B then we should have the choice not to carry it in any comp phase. I think this new rule is stupid and ultimatly this sport is going to end up like hunting! Event riders carry and use whips as do jockey's, overuse of the whip is an issue and should be harshly dealt with but the removal of the whip will encourage rein slapping and more shouting, thats just ugley!!! On the up side of this rule all those drivers that find the whip a hinderance can now relax you will only have to carry it for 15 mins per event.Who makes these rules up and why don't we ever get a say or even a vote as to new proposed rules? I couldn't quite grasp this new rule when I heard it - it all seems a bit wrong to me - I think carrying a whip is a matter of safety and if you need it in any competition it's the marathon. You aren't on the roads or coming up against unknown bogies in the dressage or cones! Can anyone explain the logic of this one? |

Jackie. Yes. No penalties for dropping a whip, if you have one, in the marathon obstacles or sections. The only prescribed whip penalties in marathon (Competition B) are for overuse or for the groom using the whip. Before 2009 you had to carry a whip in Competition B, now it's optional. (Not carrying a whip in Competition A and C still has penalties and additionally from 2009 it must be 'of traditional style' - which the BHDTA rules seminar advised us includes fibreglass but not telescopic whips. See the rules, section 917.3 and .4 p35. this is my opinion based on the rulebook and seminar |

Forgive me if this sounds stupid but does that mean that if I drop my whip in an obstacle I can leave the obstacle without it and then ask my backstepper to go in and retrieve it without gaining penalties - or just leave it there? I thought you always had to carry a whip. |

The BHDTA and FEI 2009 rules say in Competiton B - the marathon, sections and obstacles - you don't even have to have a whip on the vehicle. On whips, the competition B rule says: "945.1 Whips Whip, if carried, can only be used by the Competitor (Driver). Failure to comply will incur 20 penalties." |

Can someone please tell me if there has been a rule change to allow a competitor to not hold a whip in their hand while in a marathon obstacle as long as there is one on the vehicle? |
