Karen,

For Novice qualifiers at club events, grooms don't have to join the BHDTA [unless they want to].

Club qualifiers do NOT fall under the heading of National Events in that context.

The rule book makes it clearer on page 212 where it says:

"All grooms on the Marathon phase at a National Event (but not National Novice Singles (Level 2) at affiliated club events) must have subscribed as Members or Marathon Grooms with The British Horse Driving Trials Association. "

I can see why the shorter description that you looked at on National Classes p193 can confuse, but hope this is now clear.

You can also see this in office news, March, on the BHDTA site.

I downloaded a copy of the 2007 BHDTA rulebook, and it says: "At National Events, all Marathon Grooms must be Members or Marathon Groom Members." The critical point here is 'national events'. Do club qualifiers fall under this heading?

Note - grooms do not need to belong to the BHDTA, just drivers.

The BHDTA 2007 Yearbook is wrong in this respect - it wrongly says marathon grooms also must belong to BHDTA - see the BHDTA Rulebook online if unsure. http://www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk/ and click 'Reference'. or click here to go straight to the rule book.

ATTENTION : NOVICE QUALIFIERS (LEVEL 2)

In order to compete in the Novice Qualifier Competitions, run at Club Level, all competitors are required to be a full member of the BHDTA. For those of you that have not previously been a full member, there is an Introductory Membership Fee of £70.00. (normally £135.00).

Please note this is a change to the rules that were in place for 2006.
