Spare a thought for the Course Builder! For those of you who thought that the obstacle No 1 at Brighton was a bit tight for the first obstacle of the season, it was never intended to be like that. No sooner had David Watts, the obstacle designer and builder, put the finishing touches to his creations, than along came a man from the landowners, Brighton Council and refused permission for No 1 to be in the field above the stables area because it would damage the cowslips that grow so enthusiastically in that area. Never mind who had not explained what to whom about the design of the marathon course, some how the wires had crossed, and No. 1 had to be dismantled, taken across the Park and re-erected where you all drove it as No. 5. It made a very good No. 5, but it would have made an even better No.1 and David’s temper might have been in a better state as well. It would not have been quite so bad had the ground not been so hard as to make it almost impossible to drive any posts into it. Anyone watching the “A Team” trying to replace posts broken off on Saturday afternoon will have witnessed the problem at first hand. So, what you saw when you walk the obstacles on Thursday didn’t tell the whole story and many a hiccup was concealed by the beautifully presented obstacles you had to learn! Tony Bache (T.
