The shafts are independant & thank you for your assistance. We attended the training weekend at Escrick which was brilliant with a wealth of experienced drivers . The problem is now resolved with thanks to Judy Hilditch Christine Twigg & Sue Mart. The breeching needed to be tightened & also the traces needed to be lengthened. I was taught a hands width for the breeching but this just did not work for my mare .Guess it is different for every horse I am very grateful for all of your help. Will see how we get on thanks again Barbara |

Are the shafts independent of each other or joined together? |

Thank you Christine the Duraweb saddle I tried her in today do have a strap to fix them to the belly band & this seem to work better for her she was bending more easily too. I have a 4 wheeler with a fixed back band but the harness I have been using up to now is a Tedman but will not be using this on her again. The shafts are swan necked, The tugs still however went off the side of the pad but did not seem to affect her so much but I didn't do any sharp turns time will tell. Thank you again for your help.I was advised to strap the tug to the saddle but I think there is supposed to be some movement as otherwise it would be putting enormous pressure on the horse is this correct. She is a sensitive mare. |

I'm just wondering from what you say about the Duraweb harness, what type of tugs you are using currently and whether these are fixed to a false belly band? Also whether your carriage has 2 or 4 wheels and whether your saddle has a fixed or sliding backband? Do you have looped or swan neck shafts? All of these, and different combinations of them, will affect the movement of your shafts/tugs when you turn. |

Thank you Iain I will have a look at those. It would definitely help the pressure on her but am not sure that it would stop the tug getting stuck on the side of the pad. I think I need a different harness & have tried her in a Duraweb saddle that has an extra strap from the tug to the belly band unfortunately it is a bit small but maybe a combination will do the trick. Many thanks for your assistance much appreciated Barbara |

if it's a zilco harness you are using, zilco make a rib protector pad to go under the saddle.

My horse doesn't like the tugs pressing against her sides when turning her ears go flat back. The tugs seem to get stuck on the sides of the saddle pad & must be pinching her.I have seen one or two drivers with what look like small riding saddles can anyone suggest where I might get hold of one of these please ? I have tried pads under the saddle but it makes no difference they still get stuck I think if the swell on the pad was much wider this would do the trick. Any advice would be much appreciated thank you |
