I have fells with long manes, I tend to put them in a lattice. it keeps them cool in the hot weather & looks smart. I haven't got a pic but I know that the pair of morgans shown in British Driving Society shows are done the same.

I was just wondering.

(i) What is the point of a mane?

(ii) What is the point of plaiting?

I always find this to be a very interesting subject and it attracts lots of differing opinions.I have competed with plaits, without plaits, long manes short manes! Its very true it doesn't make your horse/pony go any better but a certain standard should always be achieved.I have sometimes achieved slighty better marks on un-plaited turnouts but it is all dependant on the presentation judges preference.I think if your horse?pony is turned out to the highest standard you are able to then this will reflect in your presentation mark.Personally I am glad that standing presentation is now only a safety check and presentation is done on the move so that you can stay more positively focussed on driving the dressage test.Plaits or not!Just enjoy x [Janet x]

The criteria for judging presentation has changed in recent years. If you go to the home page, click on "information" on the menu bar, select 'Event Papserwork' and scroll down, you will find a pdf file which gives the guidelines for presentation. I can't speak for other clubs but at the NEDTL we adhere to these guidelines. This document will give the the official version of everything you need to know.

Thanks Janet - that is good to know - I have been trying to find a picture of HRH Prince Philip doing dressage with his Fell team but i can't find one anywhere? I know they weren't trimmed tho because there are plenty of them in the obstacles.

Rather oddly (perhaps) I did put her mane in an arab plait last year for the Marathon because it was so hot!! ;)

I have been competing Gypsy for almost fifteen years and have never plaited him. He's an Irish cob. He's meant to be hairy. I always make sure he is immaculate and my carriage and harness are spotless but no amount of trimming or plaiting will make him go any better.
A very well respected pony team driver once told me "I never plait my ponies for the sake of a presentation mark - I spend the time schooling them and gain a better mark in every movement." Wise words.

If the mane is tidy and lies neatly no need to plait.

I drive a pair section As, they both have long manes and for the dressage and cones I do a long 'stallion' plait along the top of their necks, it looks very smart but also enables them to be shown as M&Ms as well. The bonus is it only takes me 5 mins to do. I do not trim their feathers either, but they are very clean (white!) and well combed. Hopefully I have attached a photo of the plait.

I am a new driver so I am interested in this subject too and I am wondering if it is that black and white. I did some outdoor competitions in my first season last year with my very hairy Fell Pony. I like to present her looking like a Fell Pony and have been quite surprised by how much interest there was in her as a HDT pony. From an eventing background I actually hate all that hair (too much hard work) but it goes with the breed and couldn't bear to cut it all off. This year will be the first year that we can attempt a Novice Qualifier ... I wonder how much I will be marked down? Perhaps a dressage judge could comment?

Diane, I was always told " A Carriage Driving horse is just that- forget Breed" So if you want to get good marks in Presentation, you will have to plait and trim I'm afraid. My Welsh Sec D gets scalped of all feather ( sob, sob ) and plaited up- but remember- never plait tails! Hope that helps! Good luck with the coming season! :-)
