I want to change our dressage/cones shirt but would it look right?

My marathon colours is royal blue with red stars.
Me and my back stepper currently wear black suits white shirts royal blue tie and trilby. I am wanting to change the colour of our shirts but what would look right. Blue shirts red tie I have thought. Would it look right though?

You are so right Martin however if you know you look good then it helps you to feel good and a nice turnout can earn an extra mark or two ;)
FWIW I like a straw hat (can be coloured) as there's less chance of the breeze catching it and whipping it off - something less to worry about. TieRack sell lovely lightweight scarves which can be used around your neck and also around your hat. Toning colours throughout and not too garish, nice if your groom wears a similar jacket/tie. One pet hate of mine is grooms wearing jods with short boots! Another is stocks, and ties should be tied neatly and right up to the shirt collar.
If you look smart and well presented you are asking to be taken seriously and it needn't cost a lot in either time or money.
Best accessory? Is a nice smile for the judge at each salute ;)
Don't forget to take a few big breaths as you approach 'A' - it helps to clear your brain and relax you. Good luck.

It's nice to look good , but bear in mind the points given to the Presentation are now a very small part of the overall Dressage score. Look smart but getting the dressage right is more important.

Diane, if it's any help, Jill Holah, acknowledged presentation expert, helped to create a document for NEDTL members to guide them in this phase. This is gist of what she had to say: “Presentation will always be a difficult issue and the dress of the driver is very subjective. However, it’s important to remember that the turnout is judged AS A WHOLE and everything should be appropriate for the level of the vehicle. Therefore, a ‘flashy’ hat with a marathon vehicle will certainly not gain any extra marks and may indeed spoil the overall uniform appearance of the turnout. Grooms need to be dressed to blend in with the turnout and drivers should remember that often the more ‘mature’ groom can look very smart in beige trousers and tweed jacket (‘stable dress’). I feel that a shirt and tie, rather than a stock, is better for a groom with a single and pair. Button holes should not be worn"

My carriage is green, so I was thinking a green jacket, black trousers with a green apron for me, and a black suit with a green tie for hubby on the back. Does that sound ok?

Lots of photos on www.mikewatts.com, national and club drivers - see the dressage and cones phases.

I suggest you look for someone with a similar coloured horse and carriage to yours and also what you like and copy their ideas.

Yes, I recommend you haunt ebay and your local charity shops for a nice tweed fitted jacket for the driver and a similar co-ordinating one for the groom.

Dress "country" not town if you have a three-phase carriage i.e. tweedy rather than "mother of the bride". IMHO a plain back jacket can look over-formal but would be perfectly acceptable.

Go for a plain trilby (a sporty hat) or a panama if it's sunny rather than a bowler (town hat) in black, grey, brown, navy - or matching flat caps can look very smart. Should have a brim to keep the sun/rain out of your eyes.

You and/or your groom can wear helmets, if you wish.

Both must wear gloves - best in brown leather or similar looking - and the driver must wear an apron. (A smart tartan rug wrapped neatly round you can do the job!)

A shirt and tie is fine - matching ties look good.

Big smile - most important!

As a groom:

For 'town' outfit:

I've worn a smart(ish) black suit, basic white shirt, brown leather gloves, a black bowler (£20 from Cancer Research, East Barnet), basic black office shoes and a plain burgundy tie.

For 'country' outfit:

Hand-me-down 1970s tweed jacket, brown leather gloves and £20 black bowler, brown/green M&S trousers (elasticated waist!), beige country shirt, office shoes and a brown tie.

Black socks are mandatory - line green ones can be a bit embarrassing when you're sat up on a carriage!

Always get 9s or 10s in presentation.

Have a look on Bennington website at photos. Also on here at loads of national events. Smart and tidy is important, but safe is a priority!
