Mike (Watts, who edits the BHDTA rules), says that the wording of the FEI and BHDTA rule previously explicitly banned the use of speedometers and distance counters. This was dropped a few years ago so allowing their use. The aim of the competition is about doing the right speed, not to catch out competitors (or wear out horses). Mike's "Better than a sack of potatoes" groom's guide contains this advice and he has delivered this as a talk at the BHDTA Training for Trials, too. (See www.mikewatts.com for a free copy.) You may find that kilometre markers are not always 1000m apart when you use gps! Janet, yes, of course we always write out our times - and I agree it's part of the fun! Batteries can fail and trees can stop gps signals. I'd never want to rely on technology. Some clubs may not allow these aids... |

Hi Fiona - are you saying here that you can use a GPS device on the marathon which will measure speed? Seems to defeat the object? |

p.s. although it's within the rules to take a mobile phone with you on the marathon, it's perhaps advisable to switch it off and to write down your times and put them where you can read them easily when you are on the marathon - and of course we are all familiar with the following rule... "926.2.5 Competitors and Grooms may not use any form of electronic communication equipment while competing on Course during the Competitions." You can use a gps device on the course. (Several people have asked me...) |

1) if you have a smartphone, download Mike Watts' free app from www.mikewatts.com (you can download this to your pc, too) 2) Join the EACDG to get their yearbook - or print pages 32 & 33 for instructions and a "ready reckoner". Find the yearbook on the home page, www.eacdg.co.uk |
