Hi Louise, We have used some at Uni that were fairly effective aslong as they we very securely fastened, if the electrodes moved even a little the readout became haphazard. The horses didn't seem to really notice them. However when we tried one on my driving pony the watch didn't receive the data as I was too far away from the transmitter on him.- Some models have a limited range.- If you do look into buying one make sure it is designed for drivers not riders. (There are some on the market specifically for trotters. There are also specialist 'carriage kits' available that can measure the speed and distance your horse is covering in addition to his HR) We also looked at the Polar Equine health check which is a base model that can be used when the horse is stationary and is quick and easy to use (just hold in place) with a watch readout. The Polar Equine Easy can be used on the move by riders or drivers with a simple one button watch type readout. Both measure the ECG accurate heart rate I'm not sure about how they would work in a multiple, normally they transmitters and receivers come as a set, there may be an issue with interference between them in that situation unless they were available on different frequencies? Hope some of that helps! Emily =] |

If you look at some endurance websites you will find info there and some sites sell them. I looked into it for Gypsy a couple of years ago but decided it was too expensive and complicated. We monitor heart rates when fittening by pulse. A stethoscope is easier but then might not be what you're looking for. |

Does anyone have experience of using an Equine Heart Monitor whilst driving? What make/type did you use? Did you find the information useful/easy to interpret? Was it noticed by the horse? Is it possible to have multiple transmitters (eg on a team) going at the same time? Did you ever use it whilst competing? (Is it allowed?) |
