Hi Alysha

Unfortunately not all carriages (especially if they are of an older style or homemade) have adjustable shafts.

I think you may be thinking of, or familiar with two piece swan neck adjustable type shafts which give you both distance from carriage and width adjustment to a degree.

An important point also, when looking for a carriage to fit 14.1hh pony, will be the seat height which is likely to be around 125cm height give or take.

Be a little wary of used carriage private advertisements stating they fit a certain size! Ask loads of questions seat height wheel size, type of shafts etc. and much more.

Give a reputable carriage dealer a call – they will not mind at all giving you advice on what to look for even if you are contemplating a private sale used carriage or different makes.

There are also lots of very knowledgeable members on this board so post those questions as many as you need.

It’s important to get a suitable carriage even if you have to beg or borrow or you could quickly undo all the hard work so far.

I nearly forgot to mention that if you do have a carriage driving club near to you give them a ring - you will find the carriage driving clubs and societies a very hospitable lot that will give advice and help.

Below a link to a YouTube video which is a bit old now! But of some sketches, meant as a bit of fun but also highlighting some extremes.

All the best

Liza

Hello
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how you measure a pony for a cart.
I have a 14.1 rising 5 gelding who I am currently breaking into drive, he is going well and i need to get him a exercise cart.
I know on all of the adverts they say to fit 14hh ect. but surely the widths of the shafts alter ect.
So if someone could tell me how I measure for one it would be greatly appreciated
thank you
