I have had two carriages without delayed steering and we now drive a bennington BX4 with delayed. It is much better, Cones clear rounds are much more common, tight turns in obstacles without hitting the post are easier. Highly recommend delayed steering. It also hides the whips indecisions.

I've always driven without delayed steering, and have had a decent amount of success at club and national level. My lad's 15hh too, and the carriage was made to order by a very helpful maker in the South midlands. I've debated as to the need for delayed steering, and have been told variously that yes I need it, no it doesn't matter if you are used to driving without, and no won't make much difference!
I can see the times it would be beneficial, but I have no issues with driving without. And having seen a few carriages withdrawn at events with breakages in the delayed steering I'm sticking as I am for now! Most of the primary makers have carriages that come with DS as standard now.

There are no cons at all to having delayed steering provided it is a good design (preferably Bennington) and you have a turntable brake and know how to use it. There is no particular need for a foot brake for the turntable, the dial for the groom to adjust is sufficient for a single.
The only possible disadvantage in dressage would be a straight rein back but just do the whole test with a bit of 'bite' on the turntable brake and it won't be much trouble.
Marathon - check that there is a little bit of resistance on the turntable before you put to then ask your groom to tighten it a small amount if the back end of your carriage slides or wips at all as you go round.
Cones - delayed steering is an absolute godsend if you want to drive zig-zags more quickly. You still need to be disciplined about squaring up to each cone but you can start each turn much sooner.
Go ahead and order delayed steering - both you and your horse will have a much easier time in obstacles and your horse will love you forever.

I will be ordering a new carriage for a single horse 15 hands shortly and would like opinions of fellow drivers on the pros and cons of delayed steering for all 3 phases. Thanks Steve
