Duncan mentions below that a "club has already demonstrated obstacle driving at a County Show". Yes - they have - it was Wolverley & District Driving Club at the Malvern Three Counties Show last June. It went off very well, and was enthusiastically received by the show organisers, viewing public and competitors alike.
There are moves afoot to repeat the event again in 2010, again under the IHDT rules, so watch out for advance notification, and get your entry in early!

Many of you may remember that I posted a survey on the forum last year, asking drivers old and new what had prompted them to want to have a go at driving. The biggest common denominator - by a long chalk - was that they had been to Lowther Country Fair and whilst there, had seen the driving trials. I'm sure the Sandringham Country Fair performed a similar role in the South East. Now Lowther will not run and Sandringham no longer has its Fair on the same weekend as the driving, so just where is our shop window?

Hello all
Just a thought, we [a few carriage drivers and Lincolnshire BDS members] were persuaded in late 2008, by one member to create a carriage driving display to music for 2009. To be honest this was not my cup of tea but after doing displays at Burghley Game and Country Fair, the CLA Game Fair, Sandringham Game Fair, Brocklesby Country Fair and The Newark & Notts Vintage Tractor and Heritage fair, a total of 25 displays, several bar-b-ques and plenty of wine later, plus raising nearly £1000 for various Air Ambulances,I am hooked, however I think we could also give demonstrations of Obstacle driving to promote the competitive element of carriage driving as well, very much as the Scurry Driving teams do throughout the country.

I read that one area/club has already done this at a Country Show using the Indoor Driving Trials rules.

We will be offering this as an extra 'event' at the venues we book for the 2010 season.

We also found that we generated a lot of interest from the public who wrongly thought carriage driving was for the 'nobility' or was too 'specialist' [private driving] and not open to all.We got a lot of questions from people whose children had outgrown their pony but they could not part with it, but still wanted to 'use' it.Lots of positives and I was amazed by the number of 'elderly' men who came up to our stand to tell us about how they used horses on the farm and for transport, and "we never had this webbing harness, it was all leather and you had to clean IT properly, you couldn't put it in the washer" etc.really fascinating stuff.

This is far from saving the Lowther's of this world but the seed has to be sown somewhere.

just an idea if you have a local country show.

Do you think as driving trials competitors we need to get out and about and promote our sport? The more people we can involve the greater the chance of our sport surviving, not enough people know what a great sport it is. How can we expect the big shows to carry on with so few entrants.

How sad that we are losing yet another northern event. Lowther, Alnwick, Castle Kennedy - all missed. Lowther then Alnwick back to back was a summer holiday for many drivers.

Unfortunately both the Driving Trials and the Country Fair will not be held again. I will miss seeing all the competitors in the Driving Office and would like to thank everyone for their contribution of their personalities, problems and fun to my 'holiday' each year at Lowther. My team and I will miss this highlight of our calendar very much.

According to the Lowther website, the show has been wrapped up for good. They do say they are looking into possibilities for a replacement event in 2011.

I see Lowther 2010 has been removed from the list of 2010 events?
